FIELD IDENTIFICATION: In winter this hawk is often seen flying low over over fields and marshes (although at times it will soar).  The male is frosty gray and white, with black wing-tips, and part of the wings' trailing edge is black.  In contrast, the female is generally brown and streaked all over.  Both male and female have a distinctive white rump.  Formerly known as Marsh Hawk.
