FIELD IDENTIFICATION: A common  winter resident in Wise County found in flocks in weedy fields, bushes, seed-bearing trees, and roadsides. This bird can be attracted to feeders with thistle (niger) seed and black-oil sunflower seeds.  In the winter, its plumage is a duller yellow-brown color.  The female is a much more buffy yellow-brown color than the male.  Field marks include a stubby finch-like beak, wing bars, notched tail.  The beautiful bright yellow plumage can be seen in late spring as they begin to migrate.

This goldfinch struck the window.  We put it in a cardboard box in the house for warmth so it would not go into shock. After about a half hour we sat the box outside after it became more alert; when we returned in the afternoon it was gone, presumably recovered.
